JEPI generates income through a combination of selling options on the S&P 500 and investing in low-volatility U.S. large-cap stocks. Popular for its high monthly distributions averaging 7-9% yield.

What is JEPI?

JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) combines S&P 500-like stock selection with an options overlay strategy to generate high monthly income. It has quickly become one of the most popular income ETFs, attracting over $30 billion in assets since its 2020 launch.

How JEPI Generates Income

JEPI uses a covered call strategy, selling equity-linked notes (ELNs) against a portfolio of low-volatility S&P 500 stocks. This produces premium income on top of stock dividends, resulting in yields of 7-9% annually.

Income vs Growth Trade-off

The covered call strategy caps upside potential during strong bull markets. JEPI will underperform in years when the S&P 500 surges 20%+, but outperforms during flat or mildly negative markets due to premium income.
