ASHR provides direct access to mainland China A-shares through the CSI 300 Index, which covers the 300 largest and most liquid stocks trading on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges. A-shares were historically only available to Chinese investors.

ASHR: Direct Access to China A-Shares

The Xtrackers Harvest CSI 300 China A-Shares ETF provides US investors with direct access to mainland China's domestic stock markets. Unlike Hong Kong-listed H-shares (accessible through FXI), A-shares trade on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges and represent the heart of China's domestic equity market.

A-Shares vs H-Shares vs ADRs

Chinese companies can be listed in three primary venues: A-shares (mainland exchanges in RMB), H-shares (Hong Kong exchange in HKD), and ADRs (US exchanges in USD). Each offers different exposure, liquidity characteristics, and regulatory considerations. A-shares provide the broadest coverage of China's domestic economy, including many companies not available through Hong Kong or US listings.

Market Access History

China A-shares were historically closed to foreign investors. Through programs like RQFII (Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor), ETFs like ASHR can now access this market. The inclusion of A-shares in major global indices has been a gradual process, with increasing MSCI index weight reflecting China's growing capital market liberalization.
