Index valuation is usually approached through aggregate earnings multiples compared with the index's own history, and through the gap between the earnings yield and government bond yields. Both are context, not signals — expensive markets have stayed expensive for years, and cheap markets have stayed cheap.

The bigger trap with the DAX specifically is composition. An index is not a fixed thing: as its sector weights shift, the multiple it "deserves" shifts too. Comparing today's multiple with a twenty-year average quietly assumes the index still contains the same kind of companies, which is often false.

Our data shows DAX at €26,000.98.

Its 52-week range is 21,863.81 to 26,573.50, putting the current level about 87.8% of the way up that band.

Where the index sits in its own range tells you about momentum and nothing about value. Both a market making new highs and one near its lows can be fairly priced, depending on what earnings did in between.

Also worth remembering that the DAX reflects listed companies, not the Germany economy. Sector concentration in the index can make it behave quite differently from domestic growth.

If you are considering exposure, the practical decision is not the level but the vehicle: which fund tracks the DAX, at what cost, in which currency, and with what tax treatment where you live. Those are knowable now; the index level in a year is not.
