EWW shows a yield of 2.65% in our data. That figure is backward-looking — it reflects distributions already paid relative to the current price, not a promise about the next twelve months.

Two things move it that have nothing to do with the fund improving. If the price falls, the yield rises mechanically. And if the underlying companies cut their payouts, the yield falls even though nothing about the fund changed.

The expense ratio of 0.50% is taken out of fund assets before anything reaches you, so the yield you see is already net of it.

Check the distribution frequency and whether your share class accumulates or distributes. An accumulating class reinvests internally and pays nothing out, which is usually preferable while you are still building the position.

Worth separating the two ways this income can reach you. A distributing share class pays cash into your account, which you then have to reinvest yourself and which may be taxed on receipt. An accumulating class reinvests internally.

If the fund holds foreign companies, dividend withholding tax is deducted before the fund even receives the income, and whether any of it is recoverable depends on the fund's domicile and your own tax residence — often a bigger number than the expense ratio.
