We publish no index target. Year-ahead index forecasts have a long public record of clustering around modest gains and missing both crashes and melt-ups, which is a reasonable description of their usefulness.

Index returns decompose into three things: earnings growth, change in the multiple investors pay for those earnings, and dividends. Earnings are forecastable within a range. The multiple is sentiment, and it is what makes the forecasts wrong.

Our data shows ASX 200 at A$9,083.80.

The more useful question for most people is contribution schedule rather than entry level. Regular investing across an index removes the need to be right about the level, and historically has beaten waiting for a better price — because the better price frequently never arrived.
